One of those diners in an old trolley car, there are about eight tables and counter seating and the atmosphere is like any of this kind of diner. Diners were all locals and several assured us as we paused at the door that we would love it. Well.
When I'm in Vermont I always do breakfast at County Girls Diner! The food is excellent, the staff is super friendly, the crowd is a mix of locals and wanderers. The diner has the classic layout with booths and bar stools and there's good music playing in the background, open early and never fails! Like the decor too guys! A++
The Food here is mostly what you'd expect in a diner but very well prepared. The new owners were previously employees here and already had a reputation for unusually good pies and cakes. This is mostly a breakfast and lunch place with diner just once a week in summer. My personal favorite is an unusual savory pancake with chopped ham and scallions in the batter, then topped with these before flipping it over to be grilled to crispness on top.
I've been here a few times for breakfast. The corned beef hash is homemade and about as good as it comes. And if you can get the pot roast omelet it's a definite score. The staff have always been friendly and they make you feel like you are home. It's a quintessential trolley car diner with original decor. They only take cash but there is an ATM on site.
Possibly the best thing about the country girl is the people. This is hands down the friendliest restaurant my wife and I have experienced in our combined 127 years of experience eating out. Everyone (yes, even a flatlander) is a local at the country girl. We never take a booth unless the counter is full.
The food was nothing to talk about and the prices was high for the amount and quality. Coffee cups we're so stained neither of us would drink from them. We will not recommend or give it another try.
We will definitely be returning and recommending that others visit. And we hope their cook is very happy there and never leaves.
I expected bad coffee and meh diner food.
The waitress was warm, friendly, welcoming and expert at handling the entire dining room at once. We asked her for her recommendation and she advised we get what we like because their cook is amazing and it's all very good...but that he's a genius with the prime rib. We ordered the prime rib.
This is a great old style diner. But the great stops outside. The entire inside of the diner that a customer can see is filthy, grease, sticky.
The Quintessential Local Diner.
The coffee was a little weak but otherwise excellent - and not at all "diner coffee". The prime rib (a very thick, generous slab) was the best I've had *anywhere*. The mashed potatoes were real potatoes - creamy and perfect. The candied carrots....well look, candied carrots are gross. But these were delicious! The entire experience was almost surreal for a diner in an old trolley car.
Architecturally, the Country Girl is a standout. Most old diners have been expanded, often to the detriment of the original structure, but other than discretely adding a kitchen and bathrooms on the back, this place is virtually unaltered from it's original state. this alone makes it worth a visit.
I almost forgot! Key lime pie for dessert! Real key lime pie - tart, just enough sweet, perfect thick, smooth texture. I'm going to be dreaming of that key lime pie.
When most folks imagine the perfect local diner they probably think nothing in real life could live up to their idealized version. Fortunately, they're wrong. The Country Girl is everything you would imagine the perfect vintage diner would be and more.
